  1. ---
  2. title: Help Chile write free software values, privacy, and digital sovereignty into their constitution
  3. date: 2022-01-19
  4. ---
  5. For those out of the loop, a group which included myself up until recently,[^1]
  6. Chile is in the midst of a revolution. They're fighting against the increased
  7. cost of living, privatization of essential services, and worsening inequality
  8. — problems facing everyone who lives under capitalism around the world
  9. — but in Chile's case, the people actually seem to be winning. The
  10. Chilean people voted overwhelmingly in favor (80% with a 50% turnout) of
  11. rewriting the constitution, a constitutional convention has been assembled, and
  12. a call has been made for the Chilean people to re-define their country's values.
  13. [^1]: No surprise given that promising popular political movements like this are deliberately under-reported in western media, especially when they're happening in the global south. We can't have anyone wondering if we could make similar changes here!
  14. One of the answers to this call arrived in my inbox courtesy of Felix Freeman, a
  15. Chilean hacker and activist for free software, free culture, and free knowledge,
  16. who asked me to signal boost [Propuestas constitucionales para Chile en la era
  17. de la informaciĆ³n][6], three proposals to establish the following principles in
  18. the foundations of Chilean law:
  19. 1. [Access to knowledge][3]
  20. 2. [Technological and digital sovereignty][4]
  21. 3. [Internet privacy][5]

  24. [5]: https://www.EraDeLaInformacion.cl/privacidad
  25. [6]: https://www.eradelainformacion.cl/
  26. Each of these proposals needs 15,000 Chilean signatures to be proposed at the
  27. constitutional convention, and I'd like you to help Felix and other advocates
  28. for digital freedoms in Chile get the attention they need. These links provide
  29. the canonical Spanish text and the appropriate place for Chileans to register
  30. their support. Felix was also kind enough to provide me with English
  31. translations for your reading pleasure:
  32. 1. [Access to knowledge][0]
  33. 2. [Technological and digital sovereignty][1]
  34. 3. [Internet privacy][2]

  37. [2]: https://www.eradelainformacion.cl/docs/privacidad_eng.pdf
  38. This is exactly the kind of political action we need to enshrine the values of
  39. free software, free culture, and free knowledge within Chilean law. I hope you
  40. will support their efforts to score a victory for the Chilean people and for
  41. global digital freedom. Opportunities like this one are vanishingly rare, and
  42. need to be taken advantage of before they're gone. The call for signatures ends
  43. on February 1st — act fast!
